Volunteering for the Right to Education

It was Venisha’s birthday on September 26!

Do you know who Venisha is?

Today I can proudly share that she is the first child I got admitted to a school as part of my volunteering efforts for the Right to Education (RTE) awareness drive in 2017.

In one of the field campaigns run for RTE awareness by Bhumi, I witnessed the vulnerable state of her family which led to my belief that access to education could be a life-transforming opportunity for children from such backgrounds. I also realised that this was my calling and something that I want to pursue for a long time. So here I am still volunteering for RTE awareness and trying to help as many children as possible!

The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act or Right to Education (RTE) act of 2009 made India one of the very few countries in the world to make education a right of every child. Section 12(1)c of the act guarantees 25% reservation for children of backward and economically sections of the society free education in private schools.

A bunch of children selling balloons at a traffic signal, small boys cleaning tables at restaurants or washing glasses at tea shops or little girls engaged as house helps – the effective implementation of the RTE Act, 2009, will possibly make such instances a thing of the past.

Coming back to my story about Venisha – on her birthday I was invited to her home for cake-cutting and dinner. I cannot express in words that joyous moment! The fact that they kept in touch all these years and remembered to invite me reinstate how much their child’s education means to them. I am humbly touched by this gesture, it instills more faith in me to continue my efforts towards RTE awareness. I also call upon young students to come and volunteer with Bhumi and help in educating more families about RTE.
