I am a second year student doing graduation in B.com (Hons) from JD Birla Institute, Kolkata while I am doing my Cost and works Accounting on the intermediate level. I am a person who just loves to eat and cook. I wish to open a school for the kids on the road side and a shelter home for the roadside beggars where they can be provided with basic necessities and even give them skills to work to make a living. I want to open an old age home where the old people get a happy environment and where they can overcome the pain they are going through. All I wish is for happiness all around, to gift everyone a moment in life which they can think about and be happy if they are having a bad day. I want to spread happiness.
How did volunteering with Bhumi happen?
So one day was just lying down in my hostel when someone knocked my door. I opened it and there were two Bhumi volunteers who were on a drive to create awareness know about Bhumi. Being an outsider in Kolkata, not having much of responsibility went to attend the orientation as I could see that Bhumi was giving me the platform to shape or give a direction to wish I have. After 5 months of volunteering I applied for Lead Bhumi as a project coordinator for Kanini Kolkata and got selected in March 2017.
Share your experience in the event that you have been actively participating in.
I have been participating in many Catalyse events as well as small events we have been conducting on weekends but one of the best experience I have is from Nakshatra. Nakshatra was an event that has given me amazing experiences from which I learnt a lot and will be thankful for my whole life. It has given me the best moments of my life. The day when my happiness had no bounds to getting emotional everytime one of the kid won. To conclude, it is the day I will cherish for a lifetime.
What change did these experiences bring in your life? How has Bhumi altered you, personally?
Bhumi has made me a strong extrovert and a confident person. I was shy and could not communicate with people but now, I am an extrovert who converses with people I meet confidently. I used to complain about everything in life but after I joined Bhumi I started seeing and taking things positively.
Tell us about one Bhumian, who has been an inspiration
One bhumian who has always been inspiration to me is Suman Paul. He is the most humble person in Bhumi. The one reason he inspires me is because of the way he interacts with patience and politeness with everyone, even when the situation is difficult. He has always been the best guide and the person with best nature who inspires others.
Any specific, special moment with kids or volunteers you would like to share with us?
My college conducted a drawing competition by the NSS wing. In the drawing competition, kids from one of the shelter homes where we used to conduct classes of Kanini had also participated. Unaware of any such event going on in my college, I was passing through the recreational area where the event was taking place with my friends group when suddenly I heard the kids howling my name. I felt I was on cloud nine and had done something for them to have remembered me even after months after completing their batch classes.
A message to every volunteer at Bhumi:
One thing I will always say to a Bhumi volunteer is that if you enjoy each and every moment and time you spend in Bhumi and try to learn something new from everyone you meet here; you will see that you are becoming a better person. Be happy no matter how bad your day was if you look at it in a positive way or face your challenges everything will fall in place. So always remember to be happy and spread happiness.
