Tell us a little about yourself!
As a person I am always creative in whatever I do. As a mother, I let my son learn from his mistakes every time he fails. I have an extremely loving and caring family who support me in everything I do. I am a believer in and an exponent of Yoga and Meditation. I try practicing it daily and it has a tremendous impact on my personality and my efficiency levels. My favourite quote is from the movie Karate Kid and I quote, “Life will knock us down – but we can choose whether or not to get back up!”
How did volunteering with Bhumi happen?
After my marriage in 2006 I moved to Mumbai with my husband Sudhir. I had my son Saksham within a year of my marriage. The next 10 years I chose to devote myself completely to his upbringing. In 2014 December, we moved back to Kolkata. After moving to Kolkata, I was looking for opportunities to do some volunteering work. I got to know about BHUMI and eventually started volunteering for LEM in Calcutta Social Project in Kolkata.
Share your experience in the event that you have been actively participating in.
I have participated in various BHUMI events – But my favourite till date is Nakshatra 2018. From handling the volunteers, getting sponsors, cheering the kids and being a part of every small thing; it has been a very special experience.
What change did these experiences bring in your life? How has Bhumi altered you, personally?
Bhumi is my source of happiness ! It has made me a better person. It is my learning ground, I could not educate myself as much as I wanted to – but now at Bhumi I can learn whatever I want to with so many people who have so much knowledge to share.
Tell us about one Bhumian, who has been an inspiration:
Difficult to choose one – they all inspire me 🙂 But of them all Suman Paul is one volunteer who inspires me to do more.
Any specific, special moment with kids or volunteers you would like to share with us?
I was sitting in a cafe one day, chose to sit outside and enjoy my coffee in the winter afternoon. To my surprise, I saw a bunch of kids howling my name and blowing flying kisses at me. These were the kids I was once teaching at a shelter home! I am extremely grateful to Bhumi for adding this experience to my life. I cannot express what I felt but it was nothing short of surreal. It made my day!
A message to every volunteer at Bhumi:
I hope you all experienced what I have been experiencing at Bhumi. It can become your own personal space for happiness and learning. Lets all work together to bring a sustainable change in our society.
