A little about yourself (origin, education, past work experiences)
Born, brought up and completed my schooling in Jaipur, Rajasthan, I am currently pursuing BA (hons) in economics from St Xavier’s college, Jaipur. Schooling was about developing a strong academic base along with nurturing my extra-curricular interests. During college, I got to work as the associate editor of the college magazine, participate as well as coordinate in various economics fests and be a member of the college student council. In my free time, I love reading books, watching movies and travelling.
How did volunteering with Bhumi happen (including beginning, which project you volunteered for)?
Bhumi came to me just at the time when I was planning to get into social work. I was exploring various NGO’s when suddenly one of my seniors asked me to accompany him to the orientation program and join it only if I find it genuine enough. The orientation was real fun with no extravaganza, with young enthusiastic volunteers motivating and inspiring all prospective Bhumians to work in this direction. I planned to join it and then there was no looking back. Currently I am associated with little Einstein- mathematics and previously I also volunteered for Hi5.
What change did these experiences bring in your life? How has Bhumi altered you, personally
When one takes the onus of educating children it is really important for the person to develop an aura so that the children can get involved and feel comfortable. I always had the fear of my impatience and impulsiveness acting as hindrances in my way. But I knew my priorities and I knew I had to overcome these for the same. After a stressed out week when I go to them during weekends I feel relaxed actually with the freshness on their faces as it is in their questions. It is an experience that everyone should have at least once in their lives.
One most memorable incident in your life as a Bhumian
The first event that I attended as a Bhumian brought a really memorable moment in my life. Last year, we decided to celebrate Independence Day with the children of Prayas School making them aware of the heroes who contributed to the independence of India which was followed by various games, winners of which were awarded. When we were about to leave few girls came to me, held my hand and took me to their classroom and requested me to dance with them. I was dumbstruck and became ready to dance with them while others sang and clapped. Today when I look at the pictures I try to live those moments again.
Tell us about one Bhumian, who you think is a very good inspiration for you
It can be none other than Tanushree Sharma (Regional manager- Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata, Chandigarh). She was the one who introduced me to Bhumi and helped me at each step whenever I needed her help. She is a really sorted person who understands the importance of managing tasks at all levels. Working day and night for such a noble cause without an expectation makes her stand apart. Other than being great professional she has amazing social skills. She plans regular informal meetings with us and discusses plans for expansion and execution of programs. She is one person whom I look up to in Bhumi and who will definitely be there no matter what.
Any specific, special moment with kids or volunteers you would like to share with us?
All the volunteers at Bhumi are really amazing people and most of them are my real good friends now. It has been a beautiful journey till now and I am really looking forward to more eventful days. Each one of us has one’s own share of highs and lows in life and when you have your friends to be there for you during those times life really turns out to be easy. Bhumi has given me that amazing lot of friends including Tanushree, Ashir, Tarang, Shivam, Apoorv and others for which I will always be thankful to in my own ways.
A message to every volunteer at Bhumi
Consider Bhumi as a golden platform not just to facilitate the needs of the society but also to enhance your own personality. Even if you volunteer for a day or two there should be a tone of responsibility and dedication associated.
