Volunteering Period: From January 2017 – Present

Tell us a little about yourself!

I am a nurse by profession and I am passionate about it, as it is in my nature to help and care for others. I have an interest in arts too.

How did volunteering with Bhumi happen?

I moved to Chennai to take up my profession. My association with Bhumi started when I came across this volunteering opportunity while I was casually surfing the internet. I have been volunteering with Bhumi, since. I started my volunteering journey with Catalyse project. I have coordinated in various capacities for Right to Education under that project in the year 2017-18.

Share your experience in the RTE campaigns event that you have been actively participating in.

RTE happened in phases during 2017. During phase II, I had been a part of various field campaigns in many areas across Chennai. During Phase 3, I had been part of the campaign that was conducted in Shollinganallur. During one such campaign, I visited a school that denied admissions to children under RTE. However, after a lot of effort we secured admissions under RTE norms in a different school.

What change did these experiences bring in your life? How has Bhumi altered you, personally?

When I began volunteering, I got the satisfaction of helping others. It felt great. But now, I have come to realize that it is my social responsibility. This experience has helped me understand how to be self-less.

Tell us about one Bhumian, who has been an inspiration

Hitesh is a Change driver who inspired me and also created a good first impression for me in the face of Bhumi in the initial days.

Any specific, special moment with kids or volunteers you would like to share with us?

During one of my field campaigns at Ayanavaram, I had taken up the application of a child. Her mother got emotional upon seeing the form, with a lot of hope for daughter’s future. She said God had sent me with tears rolling down from her eyes and I couldn’t help but melt at that instant. It was intense!

A message to every volunteer at Bhumi:

We can’t help everyone but be helpful to whom you meet every day!
