Parents-Tutor Meeting at Bhumi’s after School Community Centres

UNESCO states India has the second biggest educational system in the world with children aged below fourteen comprising 28% of the population, 7.7 million teachers and 1.4 million schools.
Parents aspire for their children to achieve and succeed in education. Parental involvement in their child’s learning and guiding them towards positive learning outcomes is considered an important predictor in order to attain such aspirations. It also aids in creating a safe and positive learning environment preventing school absenteeism, decreased drop-out ratio, socio-emotional well-being of the children. According to a thesis by Edukan.org it was stated that parental involvement helps improve parent-teacher relationships, teacher morals, and increased parental confidence and satisfaction.
To make parents feel a ‘sense of ownership’ and address them equally as partners in the betterment of their child’s learning outcomes, Bhumi’s after school community centres Programme conducts regular Parents Teacher (Tutor) Meetings every month to discuss about the children’s performance and progress. Whilst this happens on an offline basis, with the current pandemic we took this to a digital platform. Parents and children from 17 centres (namely, Decaster Road, Aaduthotti, Ambedkar Nagar, Harinarayanapuram, Stanley Nagar, Kannigapuram 1, Kannigapuram 2, Srinivasapuram 1, Srinivasapuram 2, Nagalkeni, Godhamedu, Kothavalchavadi, Koyambedu, MS Muthu Nagar, KM Garden, ICF, PK Colony) were engaged virtually where the children took this opportunity to teach their parents how to open a Zoom or Google meet link, how to mute & unmute etc. making them adapt to the “new normal” as their children did themselves.
The parents took this opportunity to express their gratitude towards Bhumi’s Covid-19 relief fund and how helpful it was to cope with their everyday food and medical needs.
Apart from the usual discussion on children’s progress, attendance, feedback, improvisation and challenges, Tutors and Associates interacted with parents to make them aware of the children’s current learning process. They discussed the well-curated holistic curriculum giving importance to children’s physical, mental and emotional well-being. Parents appreciated the efforts and the individual attention given to every child despite it being via an online platform.
Though there are certain disadvantages such as access to a device, children losing focus in online sessions or an unavoidable circumstance of missing classes when one of the parents go to work and carrying their phones with them. Despite this, some parents feel that online classes are a great initiative to gain visibility on their performance and also avoid a huge learning gap once they return to school. Tutors further, stressed the importance of practicing what was being taught in the online sessions and asked parents to ensure timely completion of homework every day.
We thank the tutors, Bhumi associates and the team in involving parents every step of the way channelling their interest in the benefit of their children and transforming them into community assets.
