Dance – the language of our souls

Hello readers,

I am Megha from Bhumi’s deStep (dance) project. I joined Bhumi so that I spend some meaningful time with children, and being a dancer, I thought what better way than to teach them some moves. I look forward to every minute that I spend dancing with these children. While dance is the language of the soul, dancing with them is much more rewarding.

I want to share my experience and a little bit more about these classes so that many more dancers like me can join us and help our children groove happily to new beats.

The deStep project came into being with the idea that its difficult to access fancy dance classes for our children and pay hefty fees for enrollment. While this was the main thought at its inception, it evolved into a more holistic approach where we decided to teach new dancing styles to the children and inspiring them to stay fit using dance as a mechanism. This project also helps them understand if dance is more than just a hobby for some them and provides them opportunities to learn more and even pursue it as a career choice.
Well now you maybe thinking how are we conducting our sessions during this global pandemic situation. Like everything else during COVID this too has been a rough path for us. We try to conduct our classes Via online methods, but slow internet, lack of enough digital devices has posed a big challenge for us. Lack of physical presence makes teaching dance very difficult too.

But where there is a will there is a way, the willingness of the children to learn and passion of our volunteers to teach has defeated COVID and related problems. We started conducting shorter sessions , having fun activities in between along with yoga & zumba to help the children increse their immunity as well. Now every week we look forward to our session and the children await the sessions eagerly too.

In fact I would like to conclude by saying that if anything made the lock-down easier for me, it was these weekly sessions with our children. If you want to join our team and become a dancing teacher too register now on

Bhumi’s Ignite Programme at shelter homes, supported by corporates like Oracle, BNP Paribas, Flex, and IM Gears Pvt. Ltd., provides supplementary education through weekend volunteering.
