On 4th of October, 2020 with the intent to seed the importance of volunteerism in our children’s minds, we celebrated Daan Utsav with the students of Odisha, Assam and Kolkata.
Celebrated every year from October 2 to 8, #DaanUtsav is India’s biggest festival of giving during which people come together and perform acts of kindness by giving their time, material or money in interesting ways to any cause(s) of their choice.
The event started with explaining to students the importance of Daan Utsav which was followed by an activity where they had to draw their idea of Change. Fortunately, cultivating joy in children doesn’t require monumental effort, this simple act of representing change with colours and paints was enough.
The results not only surprised us but also made us wonder how simply our children had conveyed the message of Change. While some drew doctors as frontline COVID warriors others painted acts of service that literally brought tears of joy in the eyes of the volunteers.
This activity was followed by a small discussion about why we should use paper bags instead of plastic bags. Children have impressionable minds and with the right guidance they can become real agents of change.
Students then made paper bags with newspapers, and our volunteers made them realize that they can make a difference even with the smallest acts of kindness.
At the end of it all both the children and the volunteers experienced immense joy and satisfaction and this event once again strengthened our belief that our work with the children is setting them on the right path.
